Jane Doe v. Georgia Department of Correction et al

Rights Behind Bars, in collaboration with Baker Botts L.L.P. and the Fair Fight Initiative, is leading the charge in challenging the blanket ban on gender-affirming surgery imposed by the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) in a lawsuit filed on behalf of Jane Doe. A transgender woman confined in men's prisons for decades, Ms. Doe has endured the GDC's unwarranted denial of gender-affirming surgery despite receiving recommendations for surgery from multiple GDC psychiatrists. This legal action, filed in federal court, asserts violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the Eighth Amendment. The lawsuit seeks individualized, medically necessary care for Ms. Doe, including gender-affirming surgery, hormone replacement therapy, and appropriate accommodations.
